The Girouard Bag

I often get asked “Did you go away on vacation? You’re very tan”. Nope, not on vacation, just at the park everyday with my son (and I do use SPF 60 but it only lasts so long). With no yard, the only outside space we have is the park. Girouard park is a couple of blocks away, so we’re often there.

Being at the park so often I need to bring the usual extra with me, like snacks, a change of clothing, sunscreen, and usually a couple of cars or Thomas trains. I’ve become quite fond of the over the shoulder type of bag because it’s hands free. I also love the simplicity of my first reversible bag, but found it was always slipping off my shoulder.

Thus the Girouard bag was born. I modified the reversible bag pattern, adjusting the strap length. I then fitted it to my body so it would fall in just the right spot. My other shoulder bag has an adjustable strap that was always slipping, so having a bag that fit just right is REALLY GREAT.

The other modification I did was add a couple of pockets on the inside of the bag (it’s reversible so sometimes those pockets are on the outside). Once the side seam is sewn it’s really easy to sew on a simple pocket over the seam before sewing up the bottom of the bag.

Is it too early to start on another reversible bag for the fall?

I love it! I have been looking for a bag and I also get the same comments on my tan and am also ALWAYS in the same park. I may just walk up and start talking to you if I haven’t already.

Thanks Anile! I know I’ve seen you and Panda at the park a few times when you were still in the ‘hood!

Perfect! I love this idea! I would love to make one! Is it easier than the Weekender Bag? ;)

  4. Yay!! Look how pretty your bag is! You’re a sewing super star! Okay, so for the bottom… you can either just top stitch the bottom closed or you can add something on the inside to make the bottom sturdier. I like to do this to many of my bags. To do that you need that plastic grid stuff for yarn and some batting. Cut the grid stuff the same size of the bottom of your bag.
