This year, Emeline & I watched the Oscars separately. Only because I’m too pregnant, too sick and too apathetic towards this years nominees to care to throw a party. And thankfully, I didn’t, because really WHAT WAS THAT? Some people are calling it a return to Hollywood and a palate cleanser… others are nominating it as the worst Oscars ever and I have to agree with the latter. Give me James Franco and Anne Hathaway over this last installment any day.
All this show did was remind me that rich & white & the safe choice STILL rules. I am dismayed at the academy for not awarding Melissa McCarthy for her role in Bridesmaids… a role like that for women is RARE in the movies and The Help was utter garbage (and ruined the book.) (And don’t get me wrong, this was a stellar cast – it wasn’t their fault!)
I’ll stop griping, momentarily. We decided to break it down into picks: Highlights, Lowlights, Best & Worst Dressed.
Here are Emeline’s highlowlights:
Nick Nolte’s pet crow- and Nick Nolte in general;
Angelina Jolie’s ridiculous right leg and Jim Rash for poking at it moments later;
Sacha Baron Cohen dressed up as The Dictator spilling ashes on Ryan Seacrest;
Emma Stone’s bit was fantastic- love it when people stick it to Ben Stiller;
JLo and Cameron Diaz’s bizarre backwards look and the awkwardness that ensued;
Zach Galiakanakis
Emeline’s Best Dressed:
Emeline’s Worst Dressed:
Annabelle’s HighLowlights
Meryl Streep’s win. She can do no wrong and frankly, I am a little upset that Emeline dared to go there about her dress. *cough*
The cast of Best in Show and these Presenters: Chris Rock, Colin Firth and Emma Stone.
My sister and I couldn’t stop laughing at the Band in the Opera Seats? The guy playing the synthesizer should have been Will Ferrell.
This robotic noise ALL NIGHT. Do your sound checks Oscar People!
Also: is Clooney the new Jack Nicholson? He really irritates me.
Annabelle’s Best Dressed:
Emeline also nominated Emma Stone for best dressed (but for editing sake I narrowed it down to two) AND she and I both agree that Penelope Cruz and Sandra Bullock looked terrrrrrrrible. What did Sandy do to her face?
My friends are Very Divided on G’s Cape. I am in the LOVE camp. I want one. Emeline, on the other hand, thinks she looked like a Hunger Games character (Disagree! Disagree!). Personally, I think Angie is looking for the next Twilight series.
So is 2012 the Year of the Cape or the Year of the Leg?

/ February 28, 2012I wasn’t particularly impressed with this year’s Oscars, but it was a significant improvement over last year’s. Although Anne was delightful last year, James was so completely horrid that it detracted from any positive gained through Anne.
Also LOVED Emma Stone’s bit.
Although I adored Melissa McCarthy in Gilmore Girls – I really did not enjoy Bridesmaids at all. I know I’m in the minority here but I thought it was one of the lamest movies I’ve ever seen. Haven’t seen the help – loved the book – disinclined to see the movie as i don’t want to ruin it.

/ February 28, 2012Yes, I thought the book was good and the movie boils it down although tries to fit too much in (in a paraphrased way) but yet cuts out too many parts that are relevant to the depth of the characters, something which the talent of these actors still can’t save. In the end it becomes a one liner about a pie. Anyway, I would steer away from it if I were you!

/ February 28, 2012This was the first year I watched the Oscars with a friend, and I have to say, it helps make the four hours pass quicker! And so much fun to talk about it all live – my 3 yr old son even got in on the girl talk about dresses (or as he called them “princess dresses”). I almost couldn’t watch last year’s show because of the absolutely strange pairing of hosts. And why them, for the Oscars, really? Weird. Billy was fun to watch at moments, but it is time to find someone new for sure. I am not a huge fan of Ricky Gervais’ hosting of the Globes, he is funny at times, but seems to try harder now to shock. I think Chris Rock would be a great host for the Oscars, or even Colin Firth would be interesting too.
The awkward back view presentation of JLo and Cameron seemed like a desperate act. And I did not like JLo’s dress at all (and was it me, or was she showing a bit of somethin’ somethin’ with the cleavage?). But JLo is gorgeous, hair and make-up looked lovely. And yes, it was hard to look at Sandra Bullock’s face for too long without cringing at what she has done to herself.
Emma Stone was great – it didn’t seem too contrived like they often do. She played it well and looked great too.
I actually like Meryl’s dress – for her. It was age appropriate and she just looks so damn amazing, she is aging so gracefully. I loved her speech too.
Hated Gwyneth’s dress/cape combo – maybe if it was on someone else, I may have liked it better. But just not a big fan of hers to begin with. I will go with year of the leg for this one… Angelina may be skinny, but I think she has a nice pair of gams to show off. I liked her dress. Posing on stage though – awkward. And I also thought Penelope looked very elegant on TV – it doesn’t translate as well in photos.
But I found no one stood out to me as a show stopper dress/look. Some nice ones, but a lot ‘meh…’ No Charilize, Halle or Salma – they always look ‘wow.’

/ February 28, 2012So I just sat watched Inside The Actor’s Studio with George Clooney and I take back every dismayed comment I have said about GC as of late. I take it alllllllllll back. I was wrong! So very wrong. Sorry George. It was a brief moment of doubt, I won’t let it happen again.

/ March 7, 2012The cape is very elegant, BUT it sort of screams pretentious a-hole to me. But maybe thinking that is a-holeness of another feather… On the fence.
