I was uber-skeptical when Emeline introduced me to Pinterest. This can appear rather odd coming from a person with a degree in photography and a background greatly reliant on Visual scope.
Our friend Sarah echoed my sentiments best when she said – actually, I’ll paraphrase what she said, since I’m too lazy to go find the exact quote… where was I? Pretty images. Yes! She said something like: “I’m so sick of seeing photographs on blogs of half-eaten bowls of oatmeal and pairs of pink Hunter rainboots (arranged just so) in a newly decorated foyer/mudroom!”
So I was deeply hesitant to look at a bunch of pretty images which would only make me feel inadequate at best (i.e. I have no pink rainboots; my “foyer” (read: hooks on a wall) is dirty & overloaded by coats & outdoor detritus; I have congealed oatmeal sitting in a sink all day… soooo not pretty). Misgivings aside, I have a wedding to plan, so I dove in… and I really like it. What I find interesting is how people catalogue information and it is a great way to focus so much visual information on the internet that I can draw upon for future reference. And in our line of business, with so much DIY inspiration out there, it can be hard to know what I really want to do and would interest others.
I find as my boards evolve, trends and things that I really want keep reappearing. Like beards, obviously I really want a beard. Just kidding – but jeez! there are a lot of beards! My theory is that Zach Galifianakis has everything to do with this movement. His performance in The Hangover and then subsequent role in Bored To Death has influenced the budding trend and now every hipster will be throwing out their mustache sticks and drawing on Sharpie Beards. That’s my Summer Prediction! You? Personally I think it is high time for upper lip hair & bushy eyebrows ON WOMEN to make a comeback.
PS> The Fiona Apple & Zach Galifianakis video is definitely worth your visit.

/ May 13, 2011Ok so I have a few thoughts:
a) I propose Joaquin Phoenix (breakdown JP) as the original beard trendsetter (stealing it from the Williamsburg Hipsters, stealing it from the Orthodox Jews), what with the ironic use of it all? And the hotness that came from it?
b) D2M (Dead To Me) on Pinterest: photos of small furry animals, pictures of nail polish and nails, pictures of desserts
c) Let’s bring armpit hair back… anyone with me?
Jen
/ May 13, 2011I agree with Emeline. I think Cray-Cray Joaquin started the beard movement, not Zach.
As for the full eyebrows, lip and armpit hair. You first. I’ll catch up on the trend when it’s filtered down to the masses.
Also? My husband looks like a serial killer (and ten years older) with a beard. No thanks!

/ May 13, 2011What I think Zach is doing, is bringing back The Big Burly Man- down with the metrosexual! And yay to that!
@Jen, I remember seeing a really pretty girl at the skate/tag/clothes store on Sherbrooke near Oxford, and she was an UBER hipster, like 7 years ago. She had blond armpit hair and seeing that made me think, maybe we CAN bring back armpit hair. But then I realized that the only reason it looked ok, was because she was a) super cool looking and b) had really great toned arms (no sausage links or wings there). So yeah, maybe after I surgically implant Linda Hamilton arms on my body, I’ll bring the pits back!

/ May 13, 2011GAH! BEARDS! ANNABELLE’S WEDDING! So much awesome!
p.s. Since I’m about to marry a beardo, I totally went and bought those stick-beards! Can’t wait to see you in one Abelle!
Annabelle
/ May 13, 2011I don’t know about the whole Joaquim Phoenix thing – BOTH his appearance on Letterman & The Hangover were in 2009. And while Joaquim was memorable, Zach made it cool. That is my informed opinion this morning!
@Jen… I can’t go full-on Frida Kahlo alone!
@hairy armpits — my mother never shaves her armpits AND she always looks cool; I’ve never had that hair of confidence.
@katie — time for a bearded baby shower! or bearded bbq!
emeline
/ May 13, 2011@hairyarmpits “hair of confidence” made me giggle
Looks like we were both wrong… (note: 2006)

/ May 13, 20112006?!?!?! Where was I? Oh right, I was having a baby.
Jen
/ May 13, 2011@emeline, see the blond can get away with a lot more hair than the darker haired folk. And she was a skatergirl. And it was 7 years ago.
@annabelle. Ok, ok fine. I’d do the Frida Kahlo with you. On two conditions. I’d like to be Frida without all the tragedy and second, I want to be Frida as played by Salma Hayek. She makes the unibrow and mustache HOT.

/ May 13, 2011I’m much too cynical for my own, or anyone else’s good. Not totally convinced about the beard trend, though we’ll have to wait till montreal’s mother of all hipster meetings- osheaga- to assess it’s full impact…
